Almost 70 percent of Nigerians did not believe elections would allow them to remove objectionable leaders, the survey found. Institutional size varied from vast, multi-campus enterprise players, such as RMIT, to small colleges with just a few hundred students. We need Buhari, only Buhari, the young men shouted, wild-eyed as they encircled a foreign journalist and photographer, half menacing and half embracing, as they pressed their grievances.
The cinematographer, Sean Kirby, has done some striking work here. Though Flinders students were much like Australian tertiary students elsewhere, their new university was anything but typical. The conscious attempt to be different in the early years of Flinders suggests interesting contemporary parallels. Scientists are still studying the 1918 pandemic, the deadliest of the 20th century, looking for lessons for future outbreaks — including the possibility that H5N1, the avian influenza virus, could mutate into a form spread easily from human to human.
He then reminded the student that while he had examined hundreds of such cases, the student had seen only a few. The cinematographer, Sean Kirby, has done some striking work here. Instead, he imposed a unique funding condition on the University of Melbourne: the university, not Canberra, must find the missing funds to sustain the VCA. The last dozen messages on the screen were exactly the same.
It is rich in oil, exporting about two million barrels a day, but the riches that oil brings have not translated into meaningful development. How to provide for so many new students? Finally, Canberra must surrender its close control of universities, since these regulations entrench conformity. Schönberg (who had, as usual, been revising their 1996 disappointment, Martin Guerre) had never written a show on a topic that was given to them, and they were only vaguely aware of Riverdance.
Meantime, Elisabeth Holdsworth's essay, published in the February issue, is still available from our office. Strict regulation and financial exigency have imposed a conformity that seems sharply at odds with the contemporary preference for choice and difference.
